With the recent unrest we've seen a resurrection of the mis-contextualized debate around the phrase "Black Lives Matter." The counter-chants of "Blue Lives Matter" and "All Lives Matter" populate social media, giving rise to a needless and misplaced argument that serves only to polarize us further.
So let me try to set the record straight for folks: The phase "Black Lives Matter" is not, nor has it ever been, meant to be exclusionary. Indeed, it is actually a plea for recognition that black lives matter as much as the lives of our Caucasian brethren - and the lives of our law enforcement personnel. It acknowledges a continuation of the devaluation of a person's life based upon the color of their skin, and hypothesizes that if - IF - black lives were viewed with the same valuation as those of policemen and Caucasians that mayhap the events of 25 May would not have occurred.
